Sharing the tradition of Opera doesn’t only take place in the theater; Opera Carolina is dedicated to sharing this tradition with all facets of the community, including our educational community. For more than 40 years, Opera Carolina has been helping children and families discover the treasure that is Opera – from in-school touring programs to summertime workshops, and the legacy that is the Opera’s educational offerings.

The Lichtin Family Foundation Opera Xpress Program

The educational touring company of Opera Carolina, Opera Xpress has been sharing the wonder of live, musical storytelling with students, teachers, and families for 45 years! Now available for schools virtually! 

  • 30-minute production is designed for the screen
  • Available to each school for 2 weeks
  • Can be viewed synchronously or asynchronously 
  • Learning guide focuses on curriculum priorities and socio-emotional learning; able to be integrated into learning platforms

Bear Hug/Abrazo de Oso

Bearnardo the Spanish brown bear is feeling lonely and lost when he meets Polly the panda bear and Marla the koala bear.  Although Bearnardo doesn’t speak the same language, he and Polly and Marla are able to turn Griff the mean grizzly bear from bully to friend by discovering that even though we are each different on the outside, our hearts are all the same!

Family Opera

Education takes form in many ways, including outside the classroom and as a family. That’s why Opera Carolina is committed to its Family Opera series – weekend performances by Opera Xpress, the Lichtin Family Foundation Program, that are free and open to families all across the Charlotte region. These beloved children’s stories set to music are a perfect first experience with opera for the young and the young at heart. Join us for the Family Opera performance coming to your neighborhood!

Opera Carolina Academy

Young Performers, Professional Partners

As Opera Carolina’s instructional arm, the Academy offers local middle school, high school and college students the training needed for all aspects of becoming a professional singing actor. These dynamic, age-appropriate opportunities are a must-do for students who are interested in pursuing this comprehensive art form in the professional world.


The Opera’s annual summer workshop is open to regional rising 8th to 12th graders. It provides musical and dramatic training, as well as various other stagecraft skills and aspects of the singing profession, and participation in a production alongside young professionals.

Academy chorus – Now meeting virtually

The Opera’s newest ensemble for rising 3rd to 7th graders.  These young singers work on foundational music and vocal skills, with it culminating on the grand opera or concert stage each semester.

Provided for students age 14 and older, the OCA connects regional singing students with highly qualified voice instructors to begin their own unique journey of vocal development.

Available for regional university vocal students, these classes are held as public events conducted by mainstage guest artists or accomplished vocal instructors. Opera Carolina master classes offer great insight into the craft for vocal music appreciators.

pARTnership Residencies

Empowering Education Through the Arts

Our innovative initiative that uses arts-activated learning to empower education for students and teachers through classroom residencies that are designed with each school’s faculty.

Residencies are available from 1-6 visits in length and explore any of the following subjects:

  • K-5 English Language Arts, Math, Science, or History
  • 6-12 English Language Arts or History
  • 6-12 Vocal music, private instruction or group workshop
