Why Support Opera Carolina?

Your Philanthropic Support

Your support is the fuel for the engine that is Opera Carolina, and that support helps underwrite PROGRAM COSTS for Title I schools, that are subsidized as much as 100% thanks to donors like you.  Did you know that Government and Arts & Science Council support has been reduced from nearly $900,000 in 2009 to a projected $165,000 for the 2020/2021 season.

Your support will support a creative and robust organization with the capacity to enhance access to its cultural programs and services. With your help, we will make Opera Carolina stronger today, and tomorrow.

Improve Access to Cultural Programming

We hope you have experienced our new IStream digital series of performances, education experiences and informational presentations. If not, you can find us on YouTube by searching ‘Opera Carolina’. Over the next several months, we will be building our digital library as a way to reach households observing ‘stay at home’ recommendations, bringing the beauty of opera to our community in new and exciting ways.

Adding value to Educators and Students

Our education programs touch the lives of more than 30,000 students, teachers and families across more than fifteen counties each year. Your support enables us to deepen our relationship with partner schools, provide our education department with more robust resources and increase inclusion by reaching new student audiences.

Elevate the Quality of Our Grand Opera Production

Help us bring cultural distinction to the company by engaging distinguished artists from across the globe, nurture the talent of both local and national singers, produce innovative productions and launch initiatives to attract new audiences.

Mission and Purpose

The Opera Guild of Charlotte, Inc. is committed to furthering musical education and appreciation freely and without profit. Our goal is to promote greater interest in the art of the Opera, and to lend assistance and financial aid to Opera Carolina and other similar organizations.

The History of The Opera Guild

The Guild was founded in 1954 with its primary purpose to provide financial assistance for Opera productions, and to further musical appreciation and education in the area. Through more than half a century of its existence, the Guild has contributed over $1 million to Opera Carolina.

From the beginning, the Guild was interested in providing support for young music lovers. It worked to arrange free matinees for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school children, as well as support music education programs in the schools.

In 1969 the Guild formally established their own Vocal Competition for aspiring young singers in the Mecklenburg schools. Presently, the program is open to collegiate students and young professionals in both North and South Carolina. Since the scholarship program began, more than 155 students from North and South Carolina have been awarded monetary prizes to help them continue their musical education.

Giving Tuesday

Artists and cultural organizations should be leaders and partners in civic engagement and social change. One of the most critical issues facing Charlotte, the Carolinas and the Southeast is lack of socio-economic mobility. Access to education and social capital are crucial catalysts for mobility.  Our community engagement initiatives both inform about our art and provide access for and to diverse groups in our community. We create opportunities for relationship building and increased social capital.

Our education programs engage communities throughout the Carolinas, cultivating and reinforcing content mastery and key cognitive strategies required for college and career readiness and providing access to new experiences and new networks of instructors, mentors, and professionals.  First Nights at the Opera bring students and families into the theater to experience the opera and interact with Principal artists.
