Opera Carolina seeks an inspiring senior leader to partner with the Artistic Director and the Board of Directors to lead the International Lyric Academy Charlotte and drive significant fundraising efforts to support the new initiative and the next chapter of Opera Carolina’s history.

Background

Opera Carolina was founded in 1948 and is now the largest opera company in the Carolinas. Opera Carolina is known for its delivery of artistic excellence, a history of outstanding professional leadership, and its commitment to producing both new works of art and the masterpieces of past generations. The company produces a wide range of Grand Opera production, Second Stage Productions, Education Programs, Civic Engagement programs and online content for the enrichment of the region. Opera Carolina is an efficient organization with an endowment fund of roughly $3.2 million, and an annual budget of $3 million. Opera Carolina is governed by a forty-member Board of Directors comprised of business and community leaders who are passionate about opera and the arts community of Greater Charlotte.

Opera Carolina’s next stage of growth begins with the successful implementation of Artist Advancement Program, of which the International Lyric Academy Charlotte is a major component. The International Lyric Academy Charlotte (ILAC) is a unique mentorship program in collaboration with the International Lyric Academy Vicenza, Italy, that draws emerging artists from across the globe to Charlotte. The 3-week program in Charlotte, followed by the 2-week program in Vicenza, provide immersive experiences for emerging artists to learn from Master Teachers, to be showcased in auditions for artistic directors and managers from across the Opera field through performances in concerts, recitals and a fully-staged opera production.

The Position

The ILAC Directorship is new to the Opera Carolina team. Under the supervision of the Artistic Director, the Director will be the chief administrative and development officer for the Academy as well as playing a significant role in expanding the culture of philanthropy for Opera Carolina. In collaboration with the Artistic Director, the ILAC Director will participate in strategic fundraising for ILAC and Opera Carolina.

The ILAC Director will be a senior staff member and will interact with various groups and individuals within Opera Carolina, including the Board of Directors, donors, ticket buyers and community leaders. The ILAC Director will also interact with the community at large and work to obtain an atmosphere that is positive, forward thinking, welcoming, and inclusive. It is envisioned that the successful candidate will have future career advancement opportunities within Opera Carolina.

  • Develop, implement, and enhance Individual Giving, Major Gifts, Corporate and Foundation grants to support ILAC and Opera Carolina in general
  • Create partnerships with U.S. and international universities to attract excellent instructors and participants for for ILAC.
  • Supervise schedules, offerings, facility
  • Collaborate with other staff members, particularly the Director of Education, Director of Production, Director of Marketing and the Director of Music Preparation to achieve cohesion and alignment with current Opera Carolina
  • Supervise, motivate, evaluate, and mentor the new Executive
  • Create and implement marketing and communications strategies to publicize ILAC to prospective national and international
  • Create and supervise the application/audition

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be an experienced professional with at least a majority of the following experiences and skills:

 

  • A minimum seven years fundraising experience with medium to large nonprofit organizations with progressively increasing responsibility. Experience as a senior professional of an opera company, or other arts and cultural organization is desired.
  • A thorough knowledge of the opera art form, opera artists and the development of young artists is required.
  • A proven record of successful gift solicitation and fundraising.
  • Experience with, and connections with established opera or similar artists.
  • Experience working with and engaging board and staff.
  • A working knowledge of arts education programs is desired.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Including being a good listener and comfortable receiving input from many sources
  • A willingness to work hands-on in developing and executing a variety of strategies
  • Emotionally mature with a good sense of humor and the flexibility and sensitivity to work with diverse personalities and situations.
  • Willingness and ability to attend evening and weekend performances and events on a regular basis.
  • S. citizenship or green card.

 

Compensation

Compensation, including benefits, is competitive and will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
