When society is challenged, the importance of the arts is at its highest. Music and art uplift us even as we struggle to overcome adversity. As we support the efforts of the healthcare system, it is important to remind our community that even before the COVID-19 emergency, the arts community was facing extreme challenges.
From the unsuccessful sales tax initiative to the anticipated 50% cut in ASC support for next season, the responsibility of ensuring the future of Opera Carolina rests firmly in the hands of those who share our vision for a dynamic professional opera company that truly enriches the quality of life in greater Charlotte.
How can you help?

Dear Friends of Opera Carolina
As the nation and our community cautiously move to re-open the economy, we want to provide a brief update on Opera Carolina’s response to the COVID-19 health emergency.
There are two important areas of concern for the Opera: Audience Safety for performances and events, and The Safety of our Artists and musicians as we attempt to gather for rehearsals and performances.
Our team is in regular contact with our partners at the Performing Arts Center and the Charlotte Symphony as we gather new information from colleagues across the country. The Board of Directors of Opera Carolina has reviewed several contingencies that may be implemented as new information is received and we move through the summer. It is important, however, that whatever decisions we make are based on factual information and our overriding concern for safety.
In this rapidly changing climate, premature decisions may not be in the best interest of our constituents, or the company. In this light, we ask you to be patient and to continue to support Opera Carolina as we do our best to serve the community with great Opera, Education and Community Programs.
We also want you to know that the Opera is managing very well during this health emergency. Our company will meet whatever new challenges are presented and we look forward to gathering together once again as an arts-loving community.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or a member of the Opera team with questions or comments to this post, or any other matter regarding Opera Carolina.
– James Meena, Artistic Director
