Melinda Whittington
Soprano
The Salt Lake Tribune praises Melinda Whittington for her “performances of emotional resonance along with their powerhouse vocals.” In May, Melinda sang her role debut as Mimi in Minnesota Opera’s performance of Puccini’s La bohème. Last season, Melinda sang again again with her home company, Opera Carolina, for her role debut as Violetta in La traviata. The previous season with the company, she sang Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and the Coming Home Soldier in Redler and Dye’s The Falling and the Rising. She also returned to the Metropolitan Opera for its production of Akhnaten and sang further performances of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with Opera Grand Rapids.
Zachary Hugo
Baritone
Acclaimed for his “vibrant and ringing” sound, Baritone Zachary Hugo enters his third year in Opera Carolina’s Resident Company as a Principal Artist. In addition to several recitals and concerts, the 2024/2025 season will see him reprise the role of Marcello for Opera Carolina’s production of La Bohème. The 2023/2024 season saw several firsts for Mr. Hugo, including his mainstage debut as Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Opera Carolina, his company debut with Opera Grand Rapids as Marcello in their production of La Bohème, as well as covering the roles of Alfio and Tonio for Opera Carolina’s double feature of Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci.
Corey Raquel Lovelace
Soprano
Corey Raquel Lovelace hails from Chicago, but has happily made her new home in the Carolinas. Most recently she became the recipient of the Second Place Award in the Heafner-Williams Opera Competiton. This season Mrs. Lovelace made an unexpected debut as Nedda in I Pagliacci when she stepped in for Italian soprano, Barbara Fritolli with Opera Carolina. She also recently debuted as Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio with Mid-Ohio Civic Opera.
The Opera Carolina Chorus
The Opera Carolina Chorus is a vibrant ensemble with an incredible sound. Consisting of local singers from around the states of North and South Carolina, the chorus performs a diverse repertoire spanning classical to contemporary works during the Opera Carolina season.
The Charlotte Symphony
One of the premier music organizations in the Southeastern United States and the oldest operating symphony orchestra in the Carolinas, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) connects with more than 130,000 music lovers each year through its lively season of concerts, broadcasts, community events, and robust educational programs.
