MUSIC BY: Giacomo Puccini
LIBRETTO BY: Giovacchino Forzano
CONDUCTOR: Stefano Vignati
Two powerful operas. One unforgettable evening.
Experience the emotional spectrum of Puccini with this stunning double bill at the Belk Theater.
Gianni Schicchi
A clever, fast-paced comedy of greed and deception. When a wealthy man dies, his family scrambles to rewrite the will—but they didn’t count on the trickery of the wily Gianni Schicchi. Featuring the beloved aria “O mio babbino caro,” this opera is a delightful contrast to the drama that precedes it.
Suor Angelica
A heart-wrenching tale of love, loss, and redemption, Suor Angelica is Puccini at his most intimate and emotional. Set within the walls of a convent, this powerful one-act opera tells the story of a young woman forced into seclusion, whose deepest secret brings her to a moment of profound transformation. With soaring melodies and raw human emotion, this opera will move you to your core.
Don’t miss this unforgettable journey of sacrifice, sorrow, and spiritual grace
Together, these works showcase Puccini’s genius—blending soaring emotion with sharp humor in a night that will stay with you long after the final curtain.

Gianni Schicchi
Wealthy Florentine Buoso Donati is dead, and his greedy relatives discover that he has left his fortune to the church. His nephew, Rinuccio suggests that his girlfriend’s father can help them. Enter Gianni Schicchi, a shrewd, self-made man with his daughter, Lauretta. Reading the will, Schicchi devises a plan. The relatives send for the notary and Schicchi, disguised as the Buosi, wearing his nightshirt and cap, dictates a new will from his “sickbed”, in which he leaves the greater part of the estate, including Buoso’s house, to his “dear friend Gianni Schicchi.” The relatives are furious, and stealing what they can from the house, are chased out by Schicchi, who remains with the happy lovers, Rinuccio and Lauretta. Given their happiness, he turns to the audience and pleads that he is not judged too harshly.
Suor Angelica
